Telescope Peak 09/24-36/09
Not a
wheeling trip through the truck was
used to get there and there is a
dirt road! This trip was a
backpacking trip! Telescope Peak is
the tallest peak in the Panamint
Range in Death Valley National Park.
Mike and I made camp in Mahogany
Flats on Thursday so as to make the
assent on Friday. We had the
mountains to ourselves on the way up
and camped over night on top! The
hike up is broken into thirds of
about 2 miles or so each, the initial
2 mile accent followed by a slight
decent after Arcane Meadows to The
Saddle and then up again with The 13
Switchbacks taking on nearly to the
summit. In total about a 3000 foot
climb from 8133 to 11,049.
The views from the
top are incredible, allowing one to
see Mt Whiney in the Sierras and Mt
Charleston in Nevada, down into
Death Valley Proper and more! Way
more.
The next morning we
came back down and headed home.
To camp you need
gear for cold, though it was
pleasant at the top for us, and at
least two days of water in your
pack. Thee is no water along the
way.
